I learned an important lesson this morning. (The rest of you will probably laugh at me for this... ;D ) When cleaning points, a dollar bill is NOT the correct choice, unless they are brand new with no use on them. ('Duhh', you all say... ;D ) (I couldn't find my metal contact cleaner.) I mean, that's what I'm used to using on electric relay and switch contacts, and it usually works great. BUT, my points have been in there for a while, and have a bit of pitting going on. So, the said dollar bill must have left shreds of itself between the contacts. I went out this morning to start it up so I could get to church (They were having a car show today as part of a big party), and it wouldn't even fire. Of course, I had no clue why, because I hadn't done that much to it last night. Once I finally figured it out, I ran some fine sandpaper between the points, and it roared right to life. I was only about 10 minutes late to church, so it wasn't a big deal, and I have an important experience for next time. As a sidenote, something occurred to me while I was working on it last night, also. This car has brought me closer to God. I never realized just how much I pray whenever I'm driving it. 'Please, God, let me get where I'm going.' 'Please, God, let it start.' 'God, please get me out of this traffic in one piece.' Reliability is highly overrated. Look at the good it's done for me! ;D

Keep a matchbook in the the glovebox. The striker strip works great for filing points and the cover is just about the perfect thickness for setting the gap.

Hi, Guys,
Best thing I ever saw for points is replacing them with a Pertronics Ignitor electronic ignition.
Put one in at 340,000 and it's still going strong a t 625!

Besides the Pertronics electr. ignition module have you changed anything else?(better coil, cables, plugs...) I'm considering doing the upgrade to no points also.

Hi, MB,
Originally, no, but added the Pertronix Coil and Plug Wires in a later re-vamp of the car. I don't know if the coil and wires buy me anything, but they look nice, and I've always trusted in brand continuity within systems - almost always a sure-shot for compatibility.
Warmest...
