A friend of mine has a 1970 vw bug that wont run right. He says you can push start it but it wont stay running very long but the generator seems to be working cause it will turn over any ideas what would be the problem

If it will start and run a short time, it is likely a carb issue. If the only way it will start is by first primming it (pouring gas or starter fluid down carb), then it could be either a carb issue or a fuel pump issue. If the generator was not working it would not keep it from starting, IF the battery is fully charged.

try changing fuel pumps first, then the carb if it keeps up. maybe check the plug wires, if they are touching the block they might be worn threw and shorting on the block. I only say that because when i bought my second bradley, one of the wires was touching and melted threw and was shorting out until i replacd the wires
