3 guys go out for lunch. Waiter says bill comes to $30, so they each give him $10. Waiter was mistaken the bill was only $25. Because they left no tip, waiter keeps $2 and returns $1 to each guy. Resulting in each guy paying $9 for lunch. Here is the problem, $9 x 3 guys = $27. Plus the $2 tip = $29 Where is the extra $1?

Hi Dan, This old gag has been around a long time. I had almost forgotten about it! The answer is ....... each guy paid $9 for a total of $27 - this included the $2 tip to the waiter. So the total they paid, minus the $2 tip, would equal $25 .... the exact amount of the bill! And the $25 they paid, plus the $2 tip equals $27 or $9 each. This $27 plus the $1 they each got back ($3) equals the $30 they gave the waiter at first! Or the $2 kept plus the $3 returned plus the $25 for the bill equals $30! It is wrong to add the $2 tip to the $27 dollars.........you have to subtract it. to get the $25 of the bill. And you have to add the $3 returned to get the original $30. Gary Hammond, P.S. ........ Isn't math fun!!! ;D
