a friend of mine was tired of pull starting his generator (in his 60s-70s) so he replaced the tecumshia engine with a 1600 VW... That got me thinking -DANGER DANGER WILL ROBISON- how many rpms does a vw transaxel spin in 4th gear?
My idea is to have 2 generator heads, each attached to one axel. And maybe have an electric motor powering it.
Yes i know that requires a power source. my thinking is run 2 powercords to the motor, each with an on/off switch. plug one in to the house to start the system, and pug the second into one of the heads. flip the switchs at the same time and have 2 self powering generators with 4 level of power output ( 4 speed trans)
What I need to know is what RPM the transaxel is capiable of in each speed.

The answer to your question far deeper than, however many RPM'S...
I am not a VW guy, I am just learning...But I do know about power transmission...
To determine the RPM on the final output of a transmission you must first know a few things.
1. what is the gear ratio of the trans? 2. what is the gear ratio of the 1st and 2nd gear? 3. what is the gear ration of 3rd and 4th gear? 4.what is the required RPM of the old engine to produce the required voltage "EG 110 or 220"??
once you have all that info, use some math...the idles gears in the transmission have no affect on this... here is an example...
If the input gear has 30 teeth and the output gear has 60 teeth, then simply divide output by input, so 60\30=2, so you have a 2:1 gear ratio there. That means for every 2 times the input turn the output turns once. The purpose of the trans is to spin the tires faster than the engine.
This is just examples to help explain how to figure the final output RPM...So if you had a 4:10 gears for the ring and pinion that would be 10 on the pinion and 41 on the ring. So to get the speed multiply the gear ratio by the RPM... 1000 rpm engine speed times the ring and pinion of 4:10 gives a final RPM of 4,100...hope this helps and doesn't confuse anyone...
