Hey Guys (and girls)….. curiosity question: What exhaust set up do you like? I am ready to put an exhaust on my GT 1, and all I am seeing other people do is the "4 tip GT System" type from J bugs and it seems to stick out pretty far. I kinda like the Baja ones that look like bugles, but would like to see some options actually installed. So if anyone would like to share their set up, I would greatly appreciate it! FYI: mine is a single port with the carb heater (don't remember the official name of that pipe) and I have deleted the heaters.

I made my own custom exhaust system which I then wrapped to hold in the heat. It uses two mufflers in series on each bank connected together with J-tubes. The bottom oval mufflers are fabricated from scratch with baffles and built in heat exchangers for cabin heat. And the top ones are baffled in line mufflers I purchased from JC Whitney. The tips are stainless steel pipes welded to the outlet pipes. Here's a link to a video I posted of it in another thread. linkGary Hammond,

Hi Meatloaf, Here are two more links to nice exhaust systems. The first one is to Al Dorsey's custom GT with "Zoom Tubes" which sound and look really great on his car. The next link is to a "Cannon" system I found online at CB Performance years ago. link #1 link #2Gary Hammond,

While I think your custom exhaust looks fantastic, I lack the tools and the skill to pull off a custom exhaust. You totally answered my question with the second post though because I was looking hard at the "cannon style" but wasn't sure if they would fit, now I know they will! Thanks a bunch!

With the right exhaust system you can dramatically increase the power of the engine ...Espically a single port . if you put on an exhaust system that collects all 4 tubes into 1 and after that you have a muffler or glass pak you get a 5% to 7% power increase . Thats a lot for a small engine.
Go to empi vw parts on line look up exhaust extractors. and exhaust systems Good Luck

The reason you gain power is not just because you collect into one tube, it's actually because the tubes are matched to the same length. The reason for this is that it takes time for each pulse of exhaust gas to evacuate the exhaust tubes. If each exhaust tube is not the same length before it reaches the collector (merges two or more tubes) then the pulses can overlap which will cause some of the exhaust gasses to flow backwards into the combustion chamber again, or at least disrupt exhaust flow. So if you're going to look for a collector exhaust be it two separate exhaust exits like the zoom tubes, or a collector that merges all four exhaust tubes, make sure they are the same length before they merge otherwise you could be spending a lot of money on something that doesn't do what you're hoping it will. Happy hunting!

Happy hunting! This is my first air cooled project, i am used to older small blocks and this is the same thing with those, but, for some reason i didnt even think of that....i was just thinking "those look cool and probably wont sound like a bunch of angry bees going down the road Thanks for reminding me! now that the weather cooled off, its time to get back to work on it!
